Особенности деловой переписки на английском языке/§3. Business English Vocabulary: style and interpretation
I. Stylistic variations of BE.
Coordinating neutral and formal words (establish, resign, fail) with their less formal counterparts (set up, stand down, go under) adds stylistic variety to one's presentation in Modern English. Thus, stylistic variation improves one's communication skills as some of the words are used in written discourse while others, especially phrasal verbs, most of the time occur in spoken or conversational English. Different register tend to use different styles. So one and the same phrase can look formal in a piece of business correspondence or informal in a telephone conversation. For example: Gerard Philips established a company in Eindhoven. or Gerard Philips set up a company in Eindhoven.
